MALE GUIDED WALK:
Code: MLE-01
Duration: 2 HOURS
Date: 26 Apr 2008
Time: Morning
Explore one of the world’s tiniest capitals on today’s guided walk around Malé.
A ten-minute walk from the pier brings you to your first stop, the National Museum in Sultan’s Park. Housed in the only remaining building of the former Sultan’s Palace, the colonial style building features an interesting array of historical artefacts and treasures. Highlights include royal thrones, ceremonial headgear and robes as well as an 11th-century coral statue of Buddha. We have acquired special entrance into the museum as it is closed on Saturdays.
Your next stop is at the 17th-century Huskuru Miskiiy or Friday Mosque, which served as the main mosque for almost four centuries. Built by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar in 1656, this intricate building is a masterpiece of coral carving and a fine example of traditional Maldivian workmanship. Have a look at the current Presidential Palace as well.
Move on to the old bazaar and market area, centre of wholesale and retail trade in the Maldives. The narrow lanes leading though the markets are packed with traders and bustling shoppers, leaving no room for vehicles to pass though. You’ll see the local fish, vegetable and fruit markets near the waterfront to get a real flavour of town life before heading towards the shopping area. Spend about 20 minutes perusing the goods before returning on foot to the pier.
